Some of the symptoms of capsular contracture are tightening, hardening, or firmness in the breast tissue around an implant. The breast may feel firm or hard compared to the other breast, and it may feel like a ball or apple under the skin. Other symptoms include:
- Discomfort, especially when lying on the breasts
- Breasts that appear distorted, rounded, or off-centered
- Breasts that seem higher or rounder than expected
- Rippling
What does capsular contracture look like?
The added pressure on your breast implants that results from tightening scar tissue can lead to a very round, ball-like appearance or a rippled or waved effect, depending on the grade of contracture; in mild cases, the breast may appear mostly normal but feel firm to the touch, while severe cases can show visible rippling or uneven contours on the breast surface.
The severity of capsular contracture is categorized using the Baker classification system:
- Baker I: Breasts feel and appear natural
- Baker II: Minimal contracture, with some firmness
- Baker III: Moderate contracture, with the breast feeling abnormally firm and exhibiting some degree of deformity
- Baker IV: Severe contracture, where the breast appears visibly deformed, feels hard, and causes pain
What other signs does Capsular Contracture have?
- Reduced mobility: The implant may be less able to move due to the tight capsule
- Pain: Pain can range from mild discomfort to severe pain, especially when lying on the breasts
- Tightness in the chest: The chest may feel tight
- Implant movement: The implant may move or rotate
